Napa Valley

The word "Napa" is of Native American derivation and has been variously translated as "grizzly bear,” "motherland," or "fish". Of the many explanations of the name's origin, the most plausible seems to be that it is derived from the Patwin word napo, meaning "house.” Go figure.

Spiced Maple Bourbon Sour

Ingredients (per glass):

  • 2 oz bourbon

  • ¾ oz fresh lemon juice

  • ½ oz pure maple syrup (the real stuff!)

  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

  • 1 egg white (optional, for a silky foam)

  • Fresh grated cinnamon or nutmeg, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a cocktail shaker, add bourbon, lemon juice, maple syrup, bitters, and egg white (if using).

  2. Shake without ice first (this is called a “dry shake”) for about 10–15 seconds to build a nice foam.

  3. Add ice, then shake again until well chilled.

  4. Strain into a coupe or rocks glass.

  5. Garnish with a dusting of cinnamon or nutmeg.

A cocktail with frothy top and cinnamon powder garnish in a coupe glass, with a small pumpkin and chopsticks in the background.

Why it works:
The maple syrup gives a deep, earthy sweetness, the lemon keeps it bright, and the bourbon’s warmth carries all those autumn spice notes. The egg white (optional) adds that cozy, velvety mouthfeel.
