Haunted Pittsburgh

Frick Mansion

The Frick Family name has long been associated with luxurious living and it only takes a glance at Frick Mansion with its 23 rooms of opulence.

However, the Fricks may have know how to live the high life, but it seems that they did not know how to let it go!

The mansion still contains most of the family’s original furnishings and design, along with the spirits of the family members themselves.

There are several entities that still dwell within the mansion including Adelaide Frick and her daughter Helen.

The spirits are said to have retained their uppercrust manners and are described as very polite ghosts! More.

THE PRIORY HOTEL 1888

PITTSBURGH'S ONLY HISTORIC BOUTIQUE HOTEL

A former Benedictine monastery, the Priory is a 42 room family owned and operated boutique hotel nestled in the historic Deutschtown section of Pittsburgh’s North Side -- an easy walk to downtown Pittsburgh, PNC Park, the Andy Warhol Museum, and Heinz Field. Built in 1888, the Priory’s then-25 guestrooms were lovingly restored to 19th century elegance by the Graf family in 1986, weaving Edwardian era antiques and reproductions to accent the building’s remarkable architectural and interior design features.

Carefully restored to modern standards, the Priory Hotel is a 42-room historic boutique hotel located in Pittsburgh's thriving North Shore, just minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. Once a Benedictine monastery, the Priory Hotel features all of the amenities of a large downtown property with the personality and personal service that only a smaller, European style hotel can offer. When you stay at the Priory, you know you've stayed at a place like no other.

Alleghany County Jail

This building may be one of the most haunted places in Pittsburgh, but we certainly don’t recommend visiting since it is still an operational jail!

The Allegheny County Jail is said to be haunted by the ghost of a prisoner who committed suicide in the early 1900s! It is said that he has remained behind and terrorizes anyone with the misfortune to share his cell!

Prisoners have ended up having to be moved to other cells because of his behavior and the cell is always filled last!

There are also a number of other vengeful spirits who are said to be causing all sorts of paranormal mischief! More.

The Original Oyster House Pittsburgh | 1870

Nestled in a corner of Market Square sits a Pittsburgh tradition – a legend, if you will – that has served seafood and beer to generations of Pittsburghers. The Original Oyster House Pittsburgh, the oldest restaurant in Pittsburgh, first opened its doors in 1870 and it’s been a popular spot ever since.

The Original Oyster House made its grand entrance into Market Square in Pittsburgh 146 years ago. Guests could buy oysters for a mere penny each and wash those oysters down with a ten cent glass of beer.

During its storied history, the Original Oyster House has only had four owners. Louis Americus, however, has earned special recognition for his stint as the restaurant's owner between 1916 and 1970. He began the tradition of selling such large fish sandwiches, one of the restaurant's most popular menu items, that special buns have to be made to hold the fillet of fish.

Americus' wife also played a prominent role in the restaurant's history, contributing the recipe that is still used to make the coating that tops the oysters and the fish.

The Original Oyster House didn't just draw locals for its delicious food. It also garnered the attention of Hollywood. The restaurant, in fact, earned a starring role in 25 films.

It seems like lots of University and College campuses have at least one haunted building, but Chatham University in its entirety claims a place in the top ten haunted places in Pittsburgh.

The entire school seems to play host to a variety of spirits including the likes of ‘The Blue Lady of Woodland Hall’.

There are also reports of apparitions in Laughlin House which was the site of a murder-suicide and there have also been sightings of Edwin Fickes in Fickes Hall. He is often blamed for moving objects around in the dorm rooms! More.
