Ipanema Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The beach inspired poets and artists

Often referred to as the “Little Paris” of Rio, this area is celebrated for its avant-garde galleries, bookstores, and cinemas. A must-visit is H. Stern, one of the most popular jewelry stores in the region, where you can enjoy a free museum tour and receive a small box of semi-precious and precious stones as a complimentary gift. Every Sunday, the vibrant Hippie Fair comes alive, offering a wide range of items, from handcrafted wooden dolls to swizzle sticks adorned with parrots. For high-end shopping, Garcia D’Avila Street showcases some of the city’s top brands.

For an authentic taste of Brazilian feijoada, some of the finest sushi, or a top-tier (and pricey) churrasco experience, Ipanema is the place to be. After dinner, enjoy a drink at Garota de Ipanema, located at the corner of Rua Vinicius de Moraes, the spot where the iconic song "Girl from Ipanema" was written. A must-try in Ipanema is the Acarajé—a flavorful croquette fried in Dendê (palm) oil and stuffed with spicy shrimp. You can find this delicacy at the Hippie Fair every Sunday in General Osório Square.

Frescobol is a beach sensation among Cariocas, resembling tennis but played without a net. The goal is for two players, each with a racket, to keep the ball from dropping. Beach soccer and volleyball are also popular sports frequently enjoyed along Ipanema Beach. When visiting Ipanema, don’t miss the chance to watch these games—or better yet, join in! Cariocas are always delighted to welcome tourists into their games.
